Water Restrictions

In a continued effort to help control future water rate increases, the City of Livonia is requesting that residents, businesses and property owners develop good outdoor water use habits as regards to when water is used outdoors.

There is one significant rate factor that can be controlled by the Livonia water customers, which is the amount of water that is used during summer peak demand hours. Individual Livonia water customers can help minimize annual rate increases by managing their water purchases during peak summer demand hours. The water rates Livonia water customers pay is directly related to when and how much water is used during peak times.

When to Water

There are three components to this program that every water customer should commit to memory.

These three demand management practices are designed to help “level out” the high water demand factors resulting in more stable long-term water rates for Livonia water customers. There would also be the benefit of increased water pressures during hot, dry periods of summer.

Water at Night

Water outdoors whenever possible, any day, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. While impractical for most water customers, this is the best time period to water in continued efforts to minimize future water rate increases. Water customers with automatic sprinkler systems should set their sprinklers to water between these hours on any desired day.

Odd/Even Watering

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, water customers with odd-numbered addresses (i.e. ending in 1,3,5,7 or 9) are asked to water outdoors only on odd-numbered dates. Conversely, water customers with even-numbered addresses (ending in 0,2,4,6 or 8) should water lawns, fill swimming pools, wash cars, etc., only on even-numbered dates. Water customers in subdivisions with common areas are also asked to restrict watering their common areas to every other day.

Avoid Watering During Popular Hours

Restrict watering between the hours of 5-9 a.m. and 5-9 p.m. when it’s your day to water outdoors. Avoid watering during “rush hour”, when water customers within homes and businesses are in maximum demand periods.

New Landscaping

New landscaping should be watered whenever needed for the first 21 days after planting.
