Greenmead 2026 Banner Celebrating America 250

On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission has many initiatives and programs leading up to this anniversary. Check out America250.org for more information on ways you can participate!

Did you know?

John Hancock was one of the most prominent political figures of the American Revolution, remembered for his leadership, wealth, and unmistakably bold signature on the Declaration of Independence. Born into a prosperous Massachusetts family, he became one of the richest men in the colonies and used his influence to support the growing Patriot movement. His early clashes with British customs officials, who targeted his merchant ships, pushed him firmly into the camp of those resisting imperial authority.

As tensions escalated, Hancock emerged as a central leader in the push for independence. Working closely with Samuel Adams, he helped organize protests, fund resistance efforts, and rally public support. His election as president of the Second Continental Congress placed him at the heart of revolutionary decision‑making, and his dramatic signature on the Declaration became a lasting symbol of defiance. Hancock’s blend of political charisma, personal courage, and public visibility made him one of the Revolution’s most recognizable and influential figures.
