St. Andrew's Society of Detroit's Highland Games

Detroit's St. Andrew's Society will host the 176th Annual Highland Games at Greenmead Historical Park Saturday, Aug. 2, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Highland Games are a celebration of Scottish culture and heritage.

As a part of this celebration, there is continuous entertainment featuring national and regional artists, a pipe band competition, a heavy athletic competition, a Highland Dance competition, a "Parade of Clans” featuring clans from across the USA, a diverse marketplace of Celtic crafts, merchandise and collectibles, and food vendors. The night before, you can join St. Andrew's Society for Cèilidh, a social gathering punctuated by lively Scottish music and fare! Birds of Prey

Join our "Birds of Prey" program 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Alexander Blue House in Greenmead Historical Park.

Discover what makes hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls top predators in the Great Lakes region! Students will use photos, videos, sound recordings, and taxidermy mounts to identify these birds and explore raptor traits and behaviors through guided, hands-on demonstrations.

Advance registration is required, with $10 due per child resident and $12 per non-resident.

Election Day

On Aug. 5, City of Livonia voters will be asked to cast ballots for a Livonia Built Bond Proposal and choose among 17 candidates running for City Council on the ballot, with the eight who earn the most votes during the primary advancing to a Nov. 4 ballot.

Here are some important dates to remember for the upcoming primary election:

  • Voter Registration: Tuesday, July 22, through 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. A person may register to vote in-person at their local Clerk’s Office with proof of residency.
  • Early Voting: Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 2-3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early In-Person Voting available at Livonia City Hall (33000 Civic Center Drive).
  • Mailed Absent Voter Ballot Request Deadline: Friday, Aug. 1, at 5 p.m. Deadline for voters to request an absent voter ballot to be mailed via first-class mail.
  • In-person Absent Voter Ballot Request Deadline: Monday, Aug. 4, at 4 p.m. This is the final deadline for registered voters to request an absent voter ballot in-person at the City Clerk’s Office for the Aug. 5 election.
  • Registration and Absent Voter Deadline: Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m. A person registering to vote in-person at the Livonia City Clerk’s Office may obtain and vote an absent voter ballot with proof of residency or vote in-person at their proper precinct.
  • Vote: Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. All voters in line by 8 p.m. will be able to vote.

Important updates regarding changes to the Kirksey Recreation Center schedules and amenities include:

Grout work in the locker rooms at The Rec is almost complete, and the women's locker room will open again on Wednesday, July 30. The leisure pool at The Rec will be closed until Aug. 18 for pool deck renovations and water slide maintenance. The splash pad at The Rec is currently closed as it is being rebuilt, and it will open this summer.
