Livonia Web Based Mapping Service
A new web-based map service is now available. This new service provides access to the City of Livonia’s GIS data on your desktop using a web browser. It features an easy-to-use “point and click” graphical user interface. Several basic GIS functions are supported: (1) different layers of geographic data (including aerial photography) may be viewed, (2) a navigation tool provides pan and zoom functions to view data at different scales, (3) an identify tool will identify features displayed on the screen, (4) there is an address lookup function to help navigate to a given location in the City, (5) a query tool is available to select either tabular or spatial data, and (6) a print tool is included that will print whatever geographic data are being viewed on the screen.
The initial map that is displayed includes the major roads data layer to help with orientation. As you zoom into the map, more and more data layers will appear. The geographic data layers available for viewing are listed in the “Map Contents” table located on the left-hand side of the screen. You may use the check box located next to each data layer to turn that particular layer “on” or “off.” A data layer that is grayed-out on the Map Contents list must be viewed at a larger scale to make it visible. The “default” map is modeled after the County Tax Maps and includes layers such as the City’s parcel data, address annotation, subdivision boundaries and annotation, lot dimensions, lot split and combination lines, and street names. Additional layers, such as aerial photography, zip codes, trash pickup days, zoning and future land use, may be viewed by turning on that particular layer.
The aerial photography was acquired during the spring of 2005 by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). It is 6-inch resolution color photography that has been mosaicked to provide a high-resolution photographic backdrop to the geographic information contained in the on-line data viewer.
