CRIME AWARENESS DURING HOLIDAY SEASONS

With the holiday season upon us, please take a few minutes and think about your safety both at home and while shopping.  During this season, be aware that our patrol of parking lots does increase to help maintain the safety you expect.  However, it is always good to think about measures you can take to reduce your chance of being a victim.

HELPFUL SAFETY TIPS DURING SHOPPING
  1. SHOP WITH A FRIEND - two people are less likely to be a victim of a crime than one person alone.
  2. KEEP YOUR EYES UP and take in your surroundings - this helps you by possibly avoiding suspicious invdividuals/situations you may have encountered if you had not been on alert - remember criminals don't like confident people- confident people tend to be difficult targets before the crime and after by being good witnesses.
  3. DON'T PLACE YOUR PACKAGES IN YOUR CAR and continue shopping - if you must, lock them in the trunk or position them in your car where they can't be seen.
  4. DON'T PUT THE BOXES FROM NEW GIFTS OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE garbage day - why advertise to potential burglars...put the boxes out on the morning of garbage day.
  5. When shopping make sure your home is secured/locked up, well lit and consider leaving the TV / radio on - MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK OCCUPIED.
  6. REDUCE THE ID / CREDIT CARDS THAT YOU CARRY WITH YOU to the minimum you need.  Place credit cards and cash in a smaller bi-fold / wallet and carry in your front pocket.
  7. IF SOMEONE ATTEMPTS TO STEAL YOUR PURSE - LET THEM - many purse snatchers drive up on victims, grab a hold of the purse and then drive off - often dragging the victims to the pavement and dragging them behind the car....it is better to let them have it and then cancel your credit cards IMMEDIATELY.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns in regards to Crime Prevention.   Also, please have your City of Livonia neighborhood association president contact me as soon as possible to get acquainted.  I look forward to working with all the Neighborhood Watch groups, senior citizens and civic groups within the city to make our Crime Prevention Bureau effective, user friendly and informative.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me, Detective Sergeant Patrick Moug.  I can be reached in the Crime Prevention office at (734) 466-2324.
